This spring I visited the amphitheater of Lutetia in Paris. It is a very special place in a predominantly busy city. When I visited, parents were playing with their children, football was being played and there was rest.  What we see today is a Gallo-Roman mixed-used amphitheater with a stage. It consisted of an oval arena, two large lateral entryways and a cavea that did not completely encircle the arena. The missing section was taken up by a stage for mimes, pantomimes and singing performances. The arena was where gladiatorial combats (munera) took place and where wild beasts were hunted (venationes). The structure had an exterior gallery and a highly ornamented facade. It has an impressive size, 100 by 130,3 meters and it is one of the largest constructions of its kind in Gaul. This great picture called "Début des fouilles" of 1931, shows the excavations of the theater of Vienne, or Roman Vienna , in France. I visited this impressive theater in 1994, which was built around 40 to 50 AD. It was after Autun the largest theater in Gaul, able to hold up to 13,000 spectators. It had a diameter of 27 meter, only one meter smaller than the theater of Marcellus in Rome. At the top of the cavea or seating area was a temple dedicated to either Apollon or Bacchus.  Starting in the 3rd century the theater, due to invasion and war, lost many of its statues and ornaments and gradually fell to rubble. During the middle ages some parts of the theater were used as shelter. In the 1930’s the Roman Theater was rediscovered and restoration began. Het theater van 'Colonia Julia Firma Secundanorum Arausio', Orange dus, staat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Het bood aan zo'n 10.000 mensen een zitplaats. filmpje . Alleen bovenstaande foto is door mij gemaakt: aan mijn bezoek aan het theater van Orange in 1994 heb ik geen goede herinneringen. Het was prachtig, maar Fransen begrijpen dat slecht, zo vond ik. Niet dat ze geen munt uit het bouwwerk sloegen, maar het blijft, zo leek het, een overblijfsel van een bezetter. Alle documentatie was op een klein foldertje na, natuurlijk in het Frans. En uit pure frustratie heette het geheel "Gallo-Romain". Geen enkel volk doet zoiets geks. Rare jongens, die Fransen. Ik ga graag terug om mijn mening te herzien. Mijn humeur was die dag niet bien.

In het theater van Vasio of het huidige Vaison la Romaine konden zo'n 7.000 toeschouwers. Het was gebouwd volgens de aanwijzingen van de Romeinse militair en architect Marcus Vitruvius Poll(i)o (85-20 v.Chr.) in zijn standaardwerk over de bouwkunst: 'De architectura'. Eén van zijn belangrijkste stellingen is dat de lengte de breedte, de hoogte en de diepte van een gebouw de menselijke maat (de verhoudingen van het menselijk lichaam) dienen te weerspiegelen. De plek van het theater was gekozen vanwege de gezonde ligging, maar met name vanwege de akoestiek. De podiummuur, de positie van de podiumdeuren, de plek van de centrale uitgangen en de positie van de verschillende nissen waren zoals Vitruvius had aangegeven. Leonardo da Vinci's (1452-1519) beroemde tekening Uomini universali van het menselijk lichaam, passend in een cirkel en een vierkant, is gebaseerd op Vitruvius' theorie.
