The '-anda' in Arycanda suggests that the city was of considerable antiquity. Many pre-Greek settlements have 'ss' (like Sagalassos and Termessos) or 'anda' in their names. During the 2nd century BC Arycanda became part of the Lycian League and issued its own coins. In 43 AD, it became part of the Roman province of Lycia-Pamphylia. Next to the splendid theater, you can find a stadium and an intimate odeum. The odeum is shown above. It dates from the 2nd century AD. This was once - I learn from varies sources - a rich decorated building. Walls, orchestra and seats were covered with colored marble. Pinara was één van de grootste steden van Lycia en haar belangrijkste haven, totdat de rivier verzandde. De overblijfselen van Pinara liggen aan het einde van een onbeduidende weg. Het was een hele wandeling om er te komen. Zeker tijdens het middaguur, ergens in de zomer van 1999. De klassiek Griekse historicus Strabo gaf hoog over de stad op, maar er is feitelijk weinig over de nederzetting bekend. De ruïnes zijn echter spectaculair en het was de wandeling waard. Homerus refereert in de Ilias aan een boogschutter Pandarus , die dezelfde zou kunnen zijn als de Pandarus die later in Pinara wordt geëerd. Het Griekse theater heeft 27 rijen en een opvallend aantal traprijen (inclusief de buitenste) namelijk 10, waardoor 9 cunei ontstaan. Het totaal aan rijen is alleen in de rechterbovenhoek nog compleet. Het theater heeft geen diazoma en meet van capiteel tot capitaal - schoenmaat 42,5 - zo'n 16 meter. Marguerite Yourcenar voert de koopman Opramoas van Rhodiapolis op als intermediair tussen Hadrianus en de Perzen. Verzonnen, maar een prachtig gegeven. Opramoas is wel een historische weldoener, die in het theater van Lymira door middel van een gift van 20.000 denarii liet opknappen. Het was in 141 n. Chr. beschadigd tijdens een aardbeving. Ook andere steden die door deze aardbeving in Lycië werden beschadigd ontvingen van Opramoas giften. Het theater had een achterwand van 1.6 meter hoog en slechts één diazoma. Er konden zo'n 8.000 bezoekers in.

Patara vormde hoogstwaarschijnlijk het bestuurlijk centrum van de Lycische bond. Althans dat schrijft Livius. Goede informatie over Lycie kun je hier vinden. In 1999 was de stad nog grotendeels door zand overstoven. De foto onderaan deze blog toont het theater na een stofzuigerbeurt, is van internet en van recenter datum. Het theater blijkt na de zandverplaatsing nog in zeer goede staat. Althans, zo blijkt uit dit van internet overgenomen plaatje. Romeins, want er is nauwelijks gebruik gemaakt van de natuurlijke omgeving.
